Gov Howard Dean in Flagstaff July 2003

Education - Registration - Motivation

DFA Flagstaff is pleased to endorse an effort to encourage the City of Flagstaff to adopt an ordinance to protect the civil rights of all citizens of Flagstaff. Please visit www.equalityarizona.org

Our Mission
DFA-Flagstaff's purpose is three-fold. We seek to educate the public about a variety of progressive issues and to offer a voice to the true majority opinion that has been suppressed by most media sources.

We seek to register all eligible voters. We believe that everyone, even those whose opinions differ from ours, should vote. We believe our democracy is best served when all those who can vote participate in our democracy.

And our third purpose is to motivate the voting public to show up and vote. We do that by highlighting differences between candidates and engaging in debates.

In hopes of accomplishing all those purposes we manage and participate in many events and post information on several progressive issues.

March and Rally Against the War in Iraq
March 24, 2007
Historic Downtown Flagstaff

Flagstaff United For Peace, a coalition of veterans, teachers, students, families, and peace and social justice groups, sponsored a downtown parade and rally commemorating the 4th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq and the estimated 75,000 soldiers and civilians killed in the war.

Over one thousand citizens showed support for our troops by calling for our men and women in uniform to come home from Iraq.

The parade, led by US Armed Forces Veterans, included Iraq War Veterans, Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, and thousands of Arizona citizens who, like the majority of all Americans, are opposed to the Iraq war and want our troops to come home.

Following the march, there was a citizens rally in the parking area of Wheeler Park at Flagstaff City Hall. The rally featured special musical performances and speakers such as Persian Gulf War and Iraq War veteran, Leonard Clark (The real McCain.com), Viet Nam War veteran, retired Lt. Col. Frank Brandt, and Iraq War veteran, Tina Peshlakai.

Will Your Vote Be Counted?

At the core of our American democracy is the right to vote and to that vote being counted. New electronic voting machines being installed nationwide, including in Arizona, are eliminating the public’s ability to verify election results.

To present this issue, DFA-Flagstaff hosted a free event Wednesday, November 30th, 2005, at NAU's Cline Library, featuring the new film Votergate- Will Your Vote Count? The audience was also treated to footage of Baxter the Chimp hacking into an electronic voting machine. Special guest Dr. Tom Ryan, founder of Arizona Citizens for Fair Elections, spoke about what is and what is not being done to secure the vote in our state.

Flagstaff's Big Box Amendment 2005 Campaign

DFA-Flagstaff produced its own radio advertisements in the 2005 Proposition 100 campaign. DFA also regretted having to cancel the scheduled April forum between the two sides at City Council Chambers due to the "No on 100" side declining multiple invitations to debate.
